실전육아를 경험한 아동발달전문가

저는 2019년 8월 아이를 출산하고 엄마가 되었습니다.

저는 아동발달에 대해서만 10년도 넘게 공부한 아동발달 전문가 인데요. 그러다보니 '아기 하나 키우는거야 거뜬하겠지' 하고 생각했습니다. 육아를 글로만 배운 주제에 말이죠.

다행히 수월한 아기를 만나 먹이고, 재우고, 놀아주는 것에는 큰 어려움이 없었습니다. 하지만 예상하지 못했던 육아의 복병이 있었으니, 그것은 바로 아기가 자고 시작되는 "검색의 시간"이었습니다.

커뮤니티의 시작

매일 수십편의 논문을 읽고 학계의 최신이론을 익히는 것이 업이었던 저는, 생전 듣도 보도 못한 출처 없는 육아정보와 속설들이 난무하는 것에 적잖이 놀랐고 이런 정보를 여과없이 육아의 지침으로 삼고 있는 초보 부모들이 너무 걱정스러웠어요. 제일 최악인 건 초보 부모의 불안한 심리를 마구 자극하는 마케팅과 상술.

'초보 부모들을 위해 아동발달전문가로서 내가 무언가 할 일이 있겠구나' 생각했어요.

시기마다 필요한 정보를 알려준다면, 근거있는 확실한 정보를 전달한다면 육아가 좀 수월해질거라고 생각했고 암흑 속 육아 연장전을 단축시킬 수 있을거라 생각했습니다.

그래서 네이버에 카페를 개설했어요. 블로그를 운영하며 일방적으로 정보를 전달할 수도 있었지만, 육아에서 정보만큼 중요한 것은 '동지애'니까요. 읽을 가치가 있는 정보다운 정보가 있을 뿐 아니라 서로 돕고, 서로 위로하는 공간이라면? 분명 부모들의 육아를 도울 수 있을거라 생각했어요.

현재 네이버카페에서 약 4,000명의의 부모들과 소통하고 있는데요. 저의 생각이 틀리지 않았다는 것을 느낍니다.

까꿍님들, 정말 감사해요!

놀잇감 개발 이야기

"아이와 뭐하고 놀아줘야 할 지 너무 어려워요. 이 개월수에는 어떤 놀잇감이 필요한가요?" 커뮤니티를 운영하면서 가장 많이 받았던 질문 중 하나예요. 아이의 곁엔 언제나 놀잇감이 있어야 하기에, 부모들은 항상 '지금 아이에게 필요한 놀잇감'을 고민해요.

하지만 저는 누군가에게 놀잇감을 추천한 적이 거의 없어요. 영양가 없는 자극만 주는 건전지 들어가는 장난감은 추천하고 싶지 않고, 소근육 발달에 분명 도움이 될 몬테소리 교구는 너무 비싸고, 안전하지 않거나, 예쁘지 않거나, 해외직구를 해야하거나 등등의 이유들 때문이었습니다.

'지금 아이에게 필요한 놀잇감을 정기적으로 보내주면 좋겠다', '모든 걸 물고 빠는 아이의 놀잇감이니 안전이나 위생은 기본이고, 우리집 인테리어를 해치지 않을 예쁜 디자인에, 합리적인 가격이어야 하는데' ...

이 모든 저의 높은 기준을 충족시키려면, 떼다 팔 수는 없었어요. 처음부터 연구개발을 하고, 모든 과정을 눈으로 확인하고, 직접 만들어야 했어요. 시중에 있는 장난감보다 훨씬 안전하게, 훨씬 예쁘게, 그리고 아동발달 전문가인 내가 내 딸에게 주고 싶은 놀잇감들로 말이에요!

놀잇감에 대한 철학

놀잇감을 만들겠다고 다짐한 후 가장 먼저 우리가 만들 놀잇감에 대한 대원칙들을 정리한 <놀잇감 제작 가이드>를 공들여 만들었어요. 그리고 시기마다 가장 필요한 놀잇감을 만들기 위해 모든 발달데이터를 샅샅이 수집해 분석하고 연구했습니다.

'너희 놀잇감의 이론이 뭐냐' 물으시면 다중지능도, STEM도 아니고요. "발달" 입니다. '발달' 만큼 중요하고 고유한 이론은 없어요. '발달'에는 유행도 없고요, 세대를 거치며 변하는 것도 아니고요, 한 명도 빠짐없이 모든 사람에게 일어나는 일이니까요.

우리는 '발달'을 지원합니다. 아이의 발달, 엄마의 발달, 아빠의 발달, 가족의 발달 모두를요.

발달을 지원하기 위해 하나의 철학만을 담을 필요는 없었어요. 아이의 발달에 필요하고 중요한 가치를 담고 있다면 몬테소리 철학도, 발도르프 철학도 도움이 되죠. 그래서 우리 놀잇감은 몬테소리 놀잇감도, 발도르프 놀잇감도 포함되어 있습니다.

짬뽕이라고 하셔도 좋아요! 결국에는

[즐겁게 성장하는 아이] + [자신감 있는 양육을 하는 부모]

= [유연하게 적응하는 가족]을 도울겁니다.

피카비(peekaby)의 탄생

아이가 성장하면서 무수히 많은 단계의 발달을 거치지만, 그 중 가장 중요한 발달이란 것이 있을까요?

저희는 그것이 '대상영속성'이라고 생각합니다. 대상영속성은 단순한 인지발달이 아니에요.

대상영속성이 발달한다는 것은 스스로의 존재에 대해 독립적으로 인식할 수 있게 되었다는 뜻이기도 합니다.

대상영속성 개념이 없는 아기는 장난감을 천으로 덮어버리면 장난감이 사라진 줄 알고, 엄마가 눈에 보이지 않으면 어딘가에 엄마가 있다는 것 조차 생각하지 못해요.

아이들이 까꿍놀이를 좋아하는 이유죠. 얼굴을 가리기만해도 엄마의 존재가 사라졌다고 생각하는데, 잠시 뒤 다시 나타난 엄마의 모습을 보고는 웃음을 터뜨리는 거예요.

아기는 수많은 까꿍놀이를 통해 사라지지 않고 여전히 곁에 있는 엄마아빠에 대한 애착을 견고히 다집니다.

또한 '세상에 존재하는 많은 것들은 계속 존재한다'는 다소 철학적인 사고를 하며 자신의 존재에 대해서도 인지하기 시작해요.

그러니까 까꿍(peekaboo)은 "엄마아빠는 항상 너의 곁에 있단다. 작은 우주인 내 아가야, 세상을 씩씩하게 탐험하렴"이라는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

해몽이 길었네요. 그래서 탄생한 저희 브랜드 이름은 <피카비, peekaby> 입니다. 세상을 씩씩하게 탐험하길 바라는 엄마아빠의 소망을 담아.

I had my baby girl in August 2019 and became a mother.

Ever since I have studied child development

with the hope to raise her as best as I possibly could.

Despite the efforts, problems arose from time to time

during child care and it kept me off my sleep,

pushing me to find the solutions that my baby girl needed.

So when my child went to sleep, my time of work began.

I devoted my day time to taking care of my baby girl,

and my night time as well but to take care of her in a better way.

The research was countless but it was nothing

because a mother must live up to her responsibility as a child.

This is the belief that I have devoted to from the start of Peekaby.

How Peekaby play kit came into existence

As child development experts, we have designed the playkits

that are right for your child's development, stage by stage.

We made countless research to develop the playkits

and have got them reviewed by specialists from multiple disciplines of child development.

While a great number of people recognize that battery-charged plastic toys are unhelpful

in child development, we implemented a solution that works.

We developed our play kit on the basic philosophy of "Montessori education”.

On top of that, I endeavored to make safer, cleaner,

and more visually satisfying toys than existing ones.

Philosophy of our play kit

We have collected, analyzed, and studied every development data

to tailor the tools to help optimize the needs of every developmental phase of our children.

If asked “what is the theory of your play kit?”, we reply "development."

Development, a phase that every one of us goes through is what we focus on.

We support the development of our children, and their mother and father.

The developmental theory is our basis.

We mostly utilize the Montessori method and the Waldorf method,

and additionally, we interpret these methods from a contemporary perspective

based on the developmental theory.

Birth of Peekaby

Peekaboo! The favorite child play, but why so?

Due to the underdevelopment of 'object permanence’,

babies have trouble finding their mother as she covers their faces to play Peekaboo.

That is the reason why the baby smiles when the mother’s hands uncover and show her face again,

as the baby has supposedly missed the mother for a time she covered her face.

Based on this play, “Peekaby” conveys a message,

“Be confident child, as mother and father are always by your side.”
